This song was originally meant to be an instrumental. I started writing it on my soundtracker in 2004 but couldn't find the inspiration to continue it back then. After rummaging through my old files, the beginning riff got stuck in my head and the rest of the song poured out of me like out of a broken dam. To my surprise, I soon started humming a melody for vocals without really thinking and it stuck. The lyrics came last, which was a veritable puzzle because I had no idea what the song should be about -- what I wanted was for the words' syllables to perfectly fit my hummed patterns, have a few rhymes here and there, while of course still making some sort of sense.

John performs a layer of rhythm and lead guitar on top of the original soundtracker audio to give it a little more depth. The bass and drums are just what I entered one note and beat at a time into the soundtracker -- hopefully it's not too noticeable.

One little scratch in your ego
My sanity wasted on your woes

From an abrasion to an abscess
It'll grow and we will digress
From a molehill to mountains
We can't let it fester!

Twist any word to rationalize
What it means to be civilized
Get a grip on your feelings
Try not to escalate!

One step in a fateful direction
Ending future generations
Pondering consequences
Is a skill we need to master!

What did we learn?
Just a little taste of freedom
May unleash our demons
I hope we can regain control
Better think twice, ahead of time
Thinking is not a crime!
Balancing act of good and evil
Learning from our mistakes!
